Personal Devotion - The Sure Mercies of David
June 3, 2011Last Wednesday, our Pastor taught on the faithfulness of God and read a passage of scripture in Isaiah 55 about the "sure mercies of David." I have been studying the Bible for years now, but don't think I ever paid attention to this phrase which is listed twice in the Bible. I couldn't shake the term.
I must confess that at times it is difficult for me to trust God. Of course, my problem has nothing to do with God and everything to do with my limited perspective of His character and His ways. Nevertheless, our God can be trusted. He is faithful. We are partakers of a living, everlasting covenant which is as solid as the sure mercies of David (Ish 55:3, Acts 13:34) God told David that He would build Him a house and give Him an everlasting throne which He fulfilled in the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jesus is King and Priest on His throne. David is a type of the Messiah whose house we are.
…but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end. Hebrews 3:6
Therefore, I must trust in a faithful God who does not lie and can be trusted. I have no other choice. It is through faith and patience that we inherit the promises of God. Sometimes I feel a great faith rise up for the taking of the Promised Land, but it soon becomes snuffed out by our current circumstances. My goal is to walk by faith and not by sight which is what His righteous ones learn to do. We also learn, as Jesus did, to be be obedient by what we suffer which does not even compare to the “obedience unto death” that Christ suffered. Not only that, the Holy Spirit does not ever leave us alone, but walks with us, talks with us, guides us, comforts us and leads us into all truth. What a wonderful life which is available to us! If only we would, by faith reach up and grab the spiritual blessings promised to all believers.
